James Lee first rebuilt

James Lee the first rebuilt

This picture must be taken after she was rebuilt following the fire which damaged her upper works Oct. 3, 1883  since she has fresh paint and name painted on her wheelhouses.  Her smoke stacks are different from the pineapple tops seen in her launch picture and are different from the flat top stacks seem on the James Lee the second.  The sunburst logo above her name does not appear in earlier or later pictures of the James Lee.  Note the deer antlers between her stacks indicating she won a time trial to capture a US Mail contract.  The Lee’s incluced U S Mail carriers in their name when listed in Memphis City Directories as well as prominently displayed on their
various boats that carried the mail.
